TREATMENT AND PREVENTION
To prevent the breakdown of tissue at susceptible body sites, it is important to
place something between the patient and the support surface. Studies have shown
that 100 percent natural wool sheepskin fills the bill.
Sheepskin is totally different from any man-made fiber. It has dense, soft, springy
resilient fibers that allow it to absorb up to 34 percent of its dry weight in moisture
without feeling damp. The moisture is rapidly dissipated away from the source, in
this case the body of the patient. Natural wool sheepskin has several unique
properties. When a sheepskin is placed between a patient and bed or wheelchair,
pressure, friction, and moisture is reduced and these are the primary causes of
pressure sores.
CAUSES
Bedsores or pressure sores are caused by the breakdown of tissue at susceptible
body sites. Normally the compression of tissue cause a reduction of blood flow in
the tissue of bony parts of the body. The heels, hip bones, and the elbows are
particularly susceptible because of the lack of fatty protective tissue over these
parts of the body.
Friction and shear force at the point of contact between the patient and the support
surface and moisture or humidity build-up at the support surface are the causes of
pressure sores or bedsores.
